Can I add more panels to my existing solar energy system?

Adding panels is always a wise idea if you have lived in your home for a while. Existing solar panels will likely continue to generate electricity for more than 25 years. However, your electricity usage may have increased since the original installation with the addition of new appliances, electric vehicles or family members.

Guyou offers solar expansion to all residential homes in Southern California.  To get started, it’s important to determine whether your home roof can accommodate the space and capacity for more solar panels. The process of adding additional panels onto your existing system isn’t going to be the same as when you were originally shopping for a solar panel system. Solar panels now offer a light weight, flexible design with newer technology and higher output.

How many solar panels do I need to power my home?

Solar Panels are sized and based on your energy consumption. When you meet with a consultant at Guyou, they will ask for a utility bill and provide an estimate. A consultant will want enough solar panels to account for 80 to 100 percent of your energy consumption, however it can be a good idea to size a system as high as 120 percent if you expect your consumption may go up in the future. Why doesn't my solar energy system offset 100% of my needs?

Ideally you’ll be able to eliminate your electricity bill charges after going solar and may receive a credit on your electricity bill some months. However, a solar energy system may not be accounting for 100% of your energy cost if you’re using more electricity than your solar panel system generates. Additionally, if your solar panel system is older, your consumption may have increased since the panels were first installed or electric rates may have also gone up over the years.

If this is the case, consider adding more solar panels to your home. 

First, make sure your monitoring system is reporting production correctly. Contact your current solar company. If you don't have a monitoring system set up, a licensed solar contractor like Guyou construction can also help install one or troubleshoot any issues with your current system.
